February is American Heart Month! It's a time to focus on taking care of your heart and to raise awareness about heart disease and how it can be prevented. The good news for wine lovers is that you can take care of your ticker with a glass of red wine.
Red wine contains an antioxidant called resveratrol that comes from the skins of grapes. Research has shown resveratrol has many heart-healthy benefits including:
- Protecting the lining of blood vessels
- Preventing blood clots
- Preventing inflammation
- Lowering the "bad" LDL cholesterol and raising the "good" HDL cholesterol
Your heart will also thank you for drinking a glass of wine after a long day at work, as it can help lower your blood pressure and help you unwind and de-stress. So raise a glass with your friends or your furbabies, let your heart be happy, and celebrate American Heart Month all February-long.
If you run out of red wine, be sure to pick up a copy of Niki Ganong's The Field Guide to Drinking in America to find out where you can get your next bottle, no matter which state you live in.
