Sunae is a Japanese technique of painting with colored sand, but it’s not very well known. Naoshi, author and illustrator of Ice Cream Work, is working to make this unique method more recognizable. Not only did she use Sunae throughout her entire book, but she also participates in a variety of projects to help people realize how neat this technique is and how easy it is to learn.

Talking about Sunae isn’t as exciting as watching videos and trying it out on your own. So, here’s your chance to learn how to create paintings with colored sand. Watch these three videos to get the idea.

The first one is Naoshi showing us her true talent with Sunae.

The second one is a step-by-step instruction on how you can try this on your own. It includes all the items you’ll need and a very detailed description for each step so you can become a pro like Naoshi.

The third video is a live creation of Sunae.

I hope you enjoy these videos and are intrigued enough to try it out. Good luck and let us know how you do. We would love to see your videos and final outcomes, so feel free to share them with us!
Don’t forget to take a look at Ice Cream Work and check out Naoshi’s talent for yourself.
